Clinical History
The patient presented with an acute abdomen after uretheral catheterism.
Imaging Findings
A 72-year-old male presented with an acute abdomen and chemical peritonitis after uretheral catheterism. Abdominal ultrasonography, excretory urography and CT with contrast were performed.
Discussion
Latrogenic ureteral lesions often occur due to surgery especially if the ureter is the seat of pathologic alterations secondary to calculosis or neoplasia. Lesions can be also caused during surgical operations especially in patients with gynaecological carcinoma in which case it can be difficult to identify and protect the ureter which can be involved in the neoplastic mass. The ureteral lesions can be also due to removal of calculi with baskets or loops. Diagnosis made must be timely to avoid serious complications. It is often convenient to perform an excretory urography that identifies the lesion. Moreover contrast CT scans can demonstrate the passage of contrast in the perirenal space (Fig. 1). Latrogenic ureteral ruptures due to catheterism are usually diagnosed immediately as a radiological study is a part of the procedure. The treatment consists of ureterovesical reimplantation.
